Frequently Asked Questions

  • Yes, but you must have a premium subscription. Commercial use of the Trivia API is not permitted on the free tier. See our pricing page to choose a plan that fits your needs.
  • Sign up for a free account to instantly get your API key, then pass it in the X-Api-Key header on every request. The documentation above includes ready-to-run examples in cURL, Python, JavaScript, Node.js, and more.
  • Your API requests will simply be denied once you hit your monthly quota — you will never be charged more than the plan you signed up for. To increase your quota, you can upgrade your plan any time on our pricing page.
  • The API responds with a standard HTTP status code and a JSON error message describing the problem. See our error codes reference for the full list of codes and how to resolve each one, or contact support if you need help.
  • The /v1/trivia endpoint accepts a premium category parameter with values including artliterature, sciencenature, geography, historyholidays, music, mathematics, sportsleisure, and several others. Filtering by category requires a paid plan, which you can compare on the pricing page.
  • By default the /v1/trivia endpoint returns a single question, but premium users can pass the limit parameter (between 1 and 30) to retrieve multiple questions at once. The limit parameter requires a paid plan; see pricing for details.
  • The /v1/trivia endpoint returns random questions and supports the category and limit parameters, while /v1/triviaoftheday returns one fixed question that is the same for all users on a given day and changes daily, with no filtering parameters. For other daily-content endpoints, check out the Day in History API.
  • Each object in the returned JSON array contains a category, the question text, and the answer. For other question-and-answer style content you can pair this with the Riddles API or the Quotes API.
